Contour TRL — Tunable Resurfacing Laser — is the most aggressive and transformative resurfacing option available in the Sciton lineup. Where ProFractional treats a fraction of the skin surface through micro-channels, Contour TRL removes the entire skin surface at a precisely controlled depth. It is full-field ablative resurfacing: the damaged outer layers of skin are vaporized completely, and the body rebuilds from the ground up.
The "tunable" designation is what separates Contour TRL from traditional ablative CO2 lasers. Your provider has granular control over the depth of ablation — from a superficial pass that removes only the outermost layer to deep resurfacing that reaches into the mid-dermis. This tunability allows for remarkable precision: the treatment can be calibrated to the exact severity of the patient's concerns, minimizing unnecessary tissue removal while maximizing the therapeutic effect.
Contour TRL is not for everyone. It is reserved for patients with significant skin damage — deep wrinkles, severe photoaging, extensive scarring, or skin quality that has deteriorated beyond what fractional treatments can meaningfully improve. For the right candidate, however, the results are genuinely transformative. This is the treatment that can take years — even decades — off the appearance of severely aged or sun-damaged skin.
How It Works
Contour TRL uses the same 2940nm erbium wavelength as ProFractional, but delivers it across the entire treatment area rather than in fractional columns. The erbium wavelength is absorbed almost entirely by water in the skin, which means tissue removal is remarkably clean and controlled — the laser vaporizes damaged tissue in precisely calibrated layers, one pass at a time, with minimal thermal damage to surrounding structures.
Your provider can adjust the depth of ablation from as little as 4 microns per pass (a very light resurfacing) to over 100 microns per pass (deep, aggressive resurfacing). Multiple passes can be layered to reach the desired depth. In addition, the system can be set to add a controlled amount of thermal coagulation — heat that extends beyond the ablated zone to stimulate deeper collagen remodeling and tighten tissue.
This level of control is why Sciton's erbium platform has become preferred over traditional CO2 lasers among many experienced providers. CO2 lasers produce significant thermal damage beyond the ablation zone, which increases the risk of prolonged redness, scarring, and hypopigmentation. Erbium-based resurfacing is inherently more precise — and in the right hands, it delivers comparable or superior results with a more predictable healing profile.
Ideal Candidate
Contour TRL is designed for patients who are ready for significant change and willing to invest in a meaningful recovery period. The treatment is most appropriate for patients dealing with deep wrinkles and severe rhytides — particularly around the mouth and eyes, extensive sun damage and photoaging that has accumulated over decades, significant scarring from acne, trauma, or surgery, severely rough or leathery skin texture, and skin laxity in combination with textural concerns.
It is also frequently used in combination with ProFractional for a "combo resurfacing" approach — Contour TRL for full-field surface renewal and ProFractional for deeper dermal remodeling in targeted areas. This combination leverages the strengths of both approaches and is one of the most powerful resurfacing protocols available anywhere.
Recovery
Contour TRL recovery is the most significant of any treatment in the Sciton lineup. Because the entire skin surface is ablated, the healing process requires patience and diligent post-care. The results justify the investment, but patients must be prepared for the commitment.
Tampa Contour TRL Guide
If you are comparing Contour TRL Tampa options, the important question is not whether it is the strongest Sciton resurfacing treatment. It is whether your skin concern truly needs full-field ablative erbium resurfacing instead of a fractional option like ProFractional or HALO.
Contour TRL is designed for patients with deeper wrinkles, severe sun damage, etched texture, or significant resurfacing goals who want a more dramatic reset and are willing to plan real recovery time. It is tunable, so depth can be adjusted, but it is still a serious medical aesthetic treatment that should be matched carefully to skin type, goals, and downtime tolerance.
Deep wrinkles, heavier sun damage, leathery texture, advanced photoaging, and patients who want more correction than BBL, MOXI, HALO, or ProFractional can realistically provide.
Expect visible healing, redness, swelling, careful wound care, and strict sun avoidance. This is not a lunch-break laser or a last-minute pre-event treatment.
ProFractional treats fractional columns for scar and texture remodeling. Contour TRL resurfaces the full treated area for more global skin renewal.
Consultations are in Palm Harbor for patients from Tampa, Clearwater, Dunedin, Tarpon Springs, Trinity, Odessa, and greater Tampa Bay.
Common Questions
Both are full-field ablative resurfacing, but they use different wavelengths. Sciton's erbium-based Contour TRL provides more precise tissue removal with less residual thermal damage than CO2 lasers. This translates to a more predictable healing process, lower risk of complications, and comparable or superior results. The tunability of the Sciton platform gives providers significantly more control over the depth and character of resurfacing.
For most patients, a single Contour TRL session produces dramatic, lasting results. The treatment is aggressive enough that one properly performed session delivers the kind of improvement that might require multiple sessions with less intensive approaches. A follow-up treatment is occasionally recommended for patients with exceptionally deep damage.
Absolutely. Contour TRL is frequently used on targeted areas — perioral (around the mouth) and periorbital (around the eyes) zones are particularly common, as these areas tend to develop the deepest wrinkles. Treating specific areas reduces overall recovery time while delivering dramatic improvement where it matters most.
Any full-field ablative resurfacing carries risks including prolonged redness, infection, scarring, and pigmentation changes. Sciton's erbium platform minimizes these risks compared to CO2 lasers, but proper patient selection, meticulous technique, and diligent post-care are all essential. This is a treatment that should only be performed by experienced providers — and Olympia Aesthetics takes patient safety extremely seriously.
The only way to know is through a thorough consultation. Contour TRL is powerful but not appropriate for every patient or every concern. Your provider will evaluate your skin, discuss your goals and timeline, and recommend whether Contour TRL — or another Sciton treatment — is the best path to your desired outcome.
